Back in September, the news of Air India coming up with new uniforms for its cabin crew made headlines. People were even more interested when they found out that Manish Malhotra would be designing the new uniforms. However, while it was assumed that from the quintessential saree, female cabin crew members would shift to churidaar, Air India seems to have stuck to its roots – the saree but with a twist.
Manish Malhotra has infused a more contemporary twist to the Air India uniforms. While one of the uniforms is a saree, there’s another interesting option – pant sarees or saree pantsuits in red, aubergine, and gold.
The uniform is a ready-to-wear ombre saree with intricate jharokha patterns and the Vista (new Air India logo icon), paired with a blouse and blazer, reported India Today. These uniforms would provide better flexibility to the female cabin crew members.
The cockpit crew’s uniform is a classic black double-breasted suit with a print inspired by the Vista.
The male cabin crew members, on the other hand, will wear bandhgalas.
“My aim was to create uniforms that capture the essence of India’s diverse culture and traditions while also embodying a modern and sophisticated look,” TOI quoted Manish Malhotra saying.
