Mumbaikars Can Now Drive Without PUC And Insurance Papers. Hope It’s Implemented Nationwide.

How many times have you been stopped by a traffic cop and asked to produce your PUC and insurance papers?

If you were in a hurry you probably forgot them at home. Or maybe, like most of us, you do not carry the papers with you. And when the traffic police pull you over, you end up paying a bribe to just get out of the situation. Most of us do not even know that there are other options than paying a fine.

To prevent such instances of bribes, arguments between the police and motorists and to encourage transparency, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Milind Bharambe has directed the traffic police to not ask for PUC and insurance papers until further notice.

This directive is an addition to the e-challan initiative which has been implemented in Mumbai.

The objective of the e-challan initiative is to encourage transparency. Because of it, traffic cops could not extort any extra fine from motorists who did not know the proper amount of fine they have to pay.

And despite the e-challan initiative, there were complaints by the citizens where they accused Mumbai traffice police of still demanding to see the PUC and other official documents. That is why the Mumbai Traffic Police has taken this measure.

“In the next few months, as citizens get used to the new system, arguments will also reduce. Till then, limiting the interaction between cops and motorists will surely help.”

Motorists have appreciated this move by the Mumbai Traffic Police. By preventing arguments between drivers and cops, this will improve the image of the department too.

Now we are just waiting for it to be implemented nationwide. That will solve a lot of traffic problems.
