This Doctor Is Modernising Madrasa Education In Violence-Prone Kashmir. Brilliant!

The most powerful tool that can change the position of society and nation is education. In an era, where hatred over religion is a common scenario, there are some who are promoting education and making India a better and ‘richer’ nation.

In Sopore district, one of the hotbeds of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, Sohail Nasti, a doctor who has also trained as a rescue pilot, is providing formal education along with the theological study of Islam.

Madrasa education spreads very slowly and is under the wrong perception that they are breeding grounds for militant and terrorists.

Speaking about his initiative to TOI, Nasti, who is settled in the UK had to say this:

“My aim is to revolutionize madrassas in Kashmir after I learnt that terrorists are produced in Islamic seminaries. We provide computers and other equipment to the madrassa to enable students to earn an honourable livelihood after education. We want scholars who can grow and work as professionals and have regular incomes. An Imam shouldn’t be paid for leading the prayers. If an Imam is working in a masjid, his income should be from another source. I want to provide madrasa students with literacy and education so that they earn their livelihood. People believe a madrassa is a place where students are taught only religious subjects, and that it has no connection with modern education. I want to change this perception.”

His international charity organization, Mother Helpage Worldwide, has been working on several projects in violence-prone Kashmir for the last two decades.
