Lewis Hamilton Clarifies His ‘Poor India’ Comment, Heaps Praise On Indian Culture

British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, who is often hailed as the greatest racer of his generation, took a subtle dig at India while speaking to BBC after the announcement of the Vietnam Grand Prix. In a controversial comment that questioned Formula One’s policy of hosting races in ‘new’ countries, Hamilton stated that he felt quite strange while racing in India.

According to the 33-year-old, he was disturbed while participating in a ‘poor country’ such as India which had an extravagant Grand Prix track made out of nowhere!

In response to his comments, Hamilton was slammed mercilessly by the Indians on Twitter, who begged to differ. However, the five-time Formula One World Champion has now issued a clarification of his statements which hurt the sentiments of many.

Taking to both his official Twitter and Instagram accounts, Hamilton heaped praise on India’s ‘incredible culture’ and lauded it as one of the most beautiful places in the world.

“First off, India is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The culture there is incredible. I have visited and always had an amazing time however whilst it is the fasted [sic] growing economy it also has a lot of poverty.”

Jumping onto what he intended with his words, Hamilton added that he felt awkward to see the number of homeless people and then reaching the Grand Prix track which was a lucrative place to be in. The pro driver also suggested that the colossal amount of money spent on the track could have used to build homes and schools for those in need.

“My reference was that a grand prix there felt strange to drive past homeless people, then arrive in a huge arena where money was not an issue. They spent hundreds of millions on a track that was now never used and that money could have been spent on schools or homes. When we did have the race nobody came because it was too expensive or there was no interest.”

Before signing off, Hamilton notified that he have met some amazing fans in the country. Here is his post:

According to Sky Sports, Mercedes also came in support of their champion with a statement of their own. In their justification, Mercedes mentioned that Hamilton was awestruck by the contrast between wealth and poverty in India and did not mean to hurt the feelings of the nation. The brand also added that it was the fault of people who interpreted his statements wrongly and drew a different conclusion.

“He spoke with empathy about India and the painful contrast between wealth and poverty that we face while travelling the globe as sporting ambassadors. He did not criticise the nation and his words were those of a thoughtful and considered champion.

“The only fault here lies with the people who have twisted his words to mean something else entirely.”

Apology accepted, Lewis. 🙂
