Lesbian Couple Gets Married At Mass Wedding In UP, Woman Poses As Man

While India continues its march towards a developed nation, the country has significantly failed to understand that homosexuality is a sexual orientation you are born with and not a crime. Same-sex marriage is still looked upon as a breach of the law in the country and its high time we re-think our notion.

However, amidst the debate regarding Section 377 of the IPC, two braveheartsĀ dared to challenge the law and listened to their hearts.

In an incident which took place in Uttar Pradesh, two 20-year-old women duped their families and married each other.

As reported by Hindustan Times, the girls knew each other for about 2 years. Their families were completely unaware of their relationship and their plans of gettingĀ married.

April 16th saw the two women turn up at a mass wedding, which is a common practice in the state, with fabricated id cards and two sets of false parents. It is believed that the girl who posed as the groom, got hold of an Aadhar card in the name of ‘Kartik Shukla’.

Miraculously, the girls pulled off a successful marriage and it was on April 21st, which was a Saturday, that the bride’s parents got to know that the groom was actually aĀ woman. It was the neighbors who identified the groom as a woman after the pictures of their marriage made rounds on social media platforms.

The family confronted the pair immediately and attacked the ‘groom’ physically. The intense brawl led to the jumping of the bride from the roof to save her partner ‘Rupa’.

The local police came to the rescue and settled issues between the brideā€™s family and her. Though the parents accused the groom of ‘cheating’ the police set the girls free considering the fact that they are adults and cannot be forced to stay separately if they are not willing to.

Homosexuality is a criminal offense in the country under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, since 2013. While the act of sexual intercourse between same-sex individuals is illegal, same-sex union or marriages are still in the grey. Also, no specific law makes it a crime. With just hope on our side, we sincerely wish to see a change in mentality in the coming future.
