Whenever any disaster occurs, many people are injured and the death toll rises exponentially. Kolkata is struck under the similar calamity.
The Vivekananda flyover was under construction and it collapsed, resulting into 15 people dying and 78 people getting injured. The flyover is located at Ganesh Talkies (Girish Park), a densely populated locality.
On top of that, many people are still trapped under the debris. According to the eyewitnesses, a huge explosion was heard and smoke erupted from the collapse.
Mamta Banerjee visited the collapse site and several rescue operations are underway. The Indian Army and NDRF team have been deployed to rescue the trapped people. The spirit of Kolkata was witnessed again after people rescued the trapped ones with their bare hands.
The 164-crore project was under construction and was supposed to be completed by 2012.
The project was delayed because of several reasons. On top of that, the residents had also complained about the flyover’s dangerous proximity to their homes.
Twitterati offered support to Kolkata in this harrowing situation with #PrayForKolkata.
