Kerala Police Forms Its First All Women Battalion With 578 Highly Skilled Professionals

India is a country that’s largely patriarchal in nature. That’s why almost every sector is run by men, thereby leading to lots of rules and regulations being written through their perspective. And given the rise in crimes against women, that route hasn’t turned out to be a particularly good idea. So, after the CRPF, the Kerala Police has decided to reverse the roles by a significant amount.

According to NDTV, Kerala Police has got its first all women battalion with 578 members, which was formally instated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

This move comes after the previous statistic that showed a 15% representation of women in the police service. That’s why the Government took steps to ensure gender equality and formed this all-women battalion for the Kerala Police. Now the numbers have gone up to 25%. Additionally, CM Vijayan said that these new recruits will stand for secularism and women empowerment.

The process was certainly not easy as the recruits had to undergo an arduous specialised recruitment test. Only after completing the training that these 578 strong women were integrated into the battalion.

The CPIM-led Government had announced their intention to form a Thiruvananthapuram based women’s battalion back in 2017. So, from September last year, the recruits were given basic training. Additionally they had to learn kalaripayattu, karate, firing weapons, swimming, yoga, driving, various computer based soft skills, forest operations and handling of issues of women, children and transgenders.

This is certainly an upgrade in terms of empowering women in India and letting the society be handled through their perspective. CM Vijayan had impressed upon the fact that policies need to have a women’s friendly approach and should be lauded for sticking to his promise. Let’s wish other states adopt this method to make our country a safer place.
