Kalki Koechlin Dares To Bare It All In A Candid Interview With Elle Magazine

Kalki Koechlin.

We saw her for the first time in Dev D playing the most notoriously loved, a flawed female character in the history of Indian cinema, Chandramukhi and there was no denying this woman is going to make her mark in this industry. One of those few people who have been able to take artsy theatre and commercial movies both in their stride, this 32-year-old gave an all-and-all out interview to Elle magazine that is so not out of her character.

Here are a few excerpts from the lady who speaks her mind.

She has struggled with the idea of living alone, but now seems to have found an equilibrium.

Now, she says, she can go about two weeks with guests in the house before she really starts to miss naked kitchen time.

Sex is a natural thing to desire and it changes with age, experiences, people, situations and everything else and she is unabashed about it.

“As you get older, you’re just grateful to be getting some.”

When asked about balancing work and her need to be doing something, she is very open about it.

Her joys are, sedate ones: a cup of tea, a long soak with a nice book, craft projects for the house. She can’t bear to sit idle for long and wonders at people who have time to argue all day on Twitter.

She showed she has no issues being naked for her art. Her theatre debut was one such experiment.

She is a total cat lady and misses her cat a lot as he lives with her mother in Pondicherry.

Celebrities are often put through gruelling media attention which is uncalled for and she calls it like she sees it. If one goes by the gossip mill, there is an assortment of people she’s rumouredly having an affair with; like filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, theater artist Jim Sarbh and her Margarita with a Straw co-star, Sayani Gupta.

Speaking about her recent project with Konkona Sen-Sharma, the latter’s directorial debut, A Death In The Gunj,

“You feel like you can trust her, you don’t need to see your takes. She knows exactly what she’s looking for.”

Kalki adores her art and loves experimenting with every aspect of it, but theatre is her first love.

Her Hindi still seems to a war yet to be won.

“Hindi is still hard for me to improvise with, and I have a problem with glamour.”

Filming a movie has it’s pros and cons.

“When I’m on set, I don’t like someone coming and poking my face or fixing my hair every two minutes. Being able to stay in character and letting all this noise and stuff just come and go—that’s something I still struggle with.”

“People feel like they can’t criticise you. They’ll be like, [the shot] was wonderful, just great, but could you just do it slightly differently? And I’m like, you didn’t like it—just say that, na!”

While she’s outspoken and clearly liberal in her politics, Koechlin stays well clear of controversy both inside the industry and out.

She loves food and resorts to easy ways of staying fit, especially enjoying green tea and other organic remedies. This might be because she comes from Pondicherry, a place of spiritual influence.

She’s like all of us, her relationship with her mother is just like what all of us have.

“With time, I’ve learnt to let it in from one ear and out through the other. And I find a sense of humour helps. We’re fine when we’re discussing films or ideas but when it comes to personal stuff… very bad.”

Can we adore her more? 🙂
