Why Are Indian Women Wearing More Western Clothes?: Jaya Bachchan On Giving Man Power To Women

Bollywood actor Jaya Bachchan is known for not mincing her words even though it sometimes lands her in trouble. From giving controversial statements in the Rajya Sabha to calling out people for clicking her pictures, she is pretty vocal about everything.

Probably that’s the reason why her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda decided to welcome her mother Shweta Bachchan and her Nani Jaya Bachchan to one of her podcasts ‘What The Hell Navya’. The topic of their latest podcast was ‘One Crown, Many Shoes’.

During their discussion on this episode, Jaya asked both Navya and Shweta, “Why is it that Indian women are wearing more western clothes?” reported The Indian Express.

After taking a couple of moments, Shweta responded to her question by saying:

“It is because of ease of movement. A lot of women today are not just at home, they are going out, they are getting jobs. It is easier to pull on a pair of pants and a t-shirt than it is to maybe drape a saree.”

But the actor-turned-politician seemed unsatisfied with her response. Hence, she went ahead and shared that she feels that we Indians have accepted that western clothing gives that man-power to a woman.

“I feel very unknowingly we have accepted that the western clothing gives that man-power to a woman. I would love to see a woman in woman power. I am not saying, ‘go wear a saree’. But in the west also, women used to dress in dresses. This whole thing changed much later when they started wearing pants.”

Adding to this, her daughter Shweta said, “With the industrial revolution, when all the men went to war, women started working in factories and they had to wear pants because you could not do all the heavy machinery work.”

IMO, women also wear clothes influenced by the West to appear modern. To some, Indian clothing like a saree or a salwar kameez is still old-fashioned. But as Jaya rightly pointed out in the podcast, confidence is in people’s skin no matter what clothes they wear.
