Haryana Launches “Selfie With Daughter” Contest In An Attempt To Save Girl Child

One of the greatest threats to our contemporary society is the menace of skewed sex ratio. Female foeticide is so rampant in certain parts of India that it makes me sick in my stomach. Especially Haryana, where the ratio is dismally low (the sex ratio at birth was 871).

Pitching for an initiative to end discrimination against girls and improving the sex ratio, one of the village panchayats in Haryana has come up with a contest called “Selfie with daughter.”

Yes! You read that right. Bibipur village panchayat has launched this contest where you are supposed to click a selfie with your daughter and send it to village panchayat, Sunil Jaglan over Whatsapp, a social messaging app by June 17.

Also, the best of the three selfies would be awarded cash prizes and a trophy. The winning entry will get a trophy, a certificate and Rs 2,100 cash prize on June 19.

“I have received over 100 selfies with daughters from across the state in last three days,” Jaglan said. He further added,”Usually we don’t see many pictures of daughters in people’s house here. The objective of the contest is to increase importance of daughters in their homes”.

What can be a better way to fuel the Beti Bachao Campaign other than this? Jaglan reasons,” Clicking selfies is the latest craze, so we decided to hold this contest to encourage parents to take pictures with their daughters.

Well, this program is an innovative initiative and that it comes from Haryana, which has adverse sex-ratio, makes this all the more laudable!
