We, as a nation, collectively hung our heads in shame when news arrived that the Australian team’s bus was attacked on the way to their hotel after the match against India in Guwahati, Assam.
Many Indian cricketers and sports commentators took to Twitter to condemn this act. But everyone had the same thoughts on their mind: Does anyone really deserve this for winning a game against the home team, fair and square? Are we really that far gone in our fanaticism for cricket? What does this say about our country, which swears that it treats it’s guests as God?
It’s not easy to seek forgiveness for a mistake that is not yours to begin with. It requires a big heart. And with a very simple yet powerful gesture, the people of Guwahati have proved that their hearts are indeed big.
On Wednesday morning, as the Aussies were departing from Guwahati, two groups of cricket fans gathered outside the Australian team’s hotel and the LGBI Airport, holding up placards that said ‘Sorry’.
The groups comprised about 100 youngsters, possibly college goers, who stood outside the Radisson Blu Hotel and the LGBI airport, waiting for the Aussie team, which was on its way to Hyderabad for their next showdown with the Men in Blue.
They even chanted the word ‘Sorry’ when the players disembarked from the bus at the airport.

Not just Team Australia, these fans had an apology for the BCCI as well.
There was a stream of heartfelt apology-seeking tweets on Twitter as well.

The damage had already been done. Catching the culprit was going to be a job for the law enforcement. But this heartwarming gesture by fans was probably the best way they could express how much they regretted what happened. And the best part? It worked!
The sound of their apologies did, in fact, touch Team Australia’s hearts!
Whilst the bus home last night wasn’t ideal, the support from fans & children across Assam today in response was kind. Cheers 2 good vibes✌🏼

Good vibes indeed!
Besides, here’s another reason to feel better. The police have brought in two youths for questioning in connection with this incident.
And now, we’d like to say thank you to these Guwahati fans.
Thank you for not letting the shameful act of one misguided fan tarnish the image of the entire city. Thank you for proving that even the simplest gesture, done straight from the heart, can have a remarkable effect.
And finally, thank you for showing the world that we may fumble and falter some time, but we are still the land of Atithi Devo Bhava.
