Gauri Khan Says She Changed SRK’s Name So Her Parents Think He’s Hindu & Approve Their Marriage

It’s been more than thirty years that the Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan has been married to the love of his life, Gauri Khan. In the past three decades that seems like ‘yesterday’ to the actor, the couple has had three kids.

But, getting together wasn’t a fairytale, as it might seem to some. Back in 2008, Gauri spoke about the time when her parents didn’t agree with her decision to get married to 26-year-old SRK when she was 21 years old.

“My parents were obviously not for it. We were so young and then to take a decision to get married and to a person who is going to join films, and being from a different religion, the most important,” she was seen saying in designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s show ‘First Ladies’.

She further recalled they had changed SRK’s name to get accepted by her parents.

“We changed his name to Abhinav so they feel he is a Hindu boy but that was really silly and very childish.”

But despite all the roadblocks, they got married.

Talking about how the transition from Delhi to Bombay was for her, she said, “When I came to Bombay it was very difficult. I was so new and life was so different and new people, a new place, and a new home. But the journey has been amazing.”

She also revealed that they stayed at Indian filmmaker Aziz Mirza’s apartment for the first six months and then moved to a rented apartment.

“There was nothing. Mom came from Delhi and there was no bed, there was no sofa, no chair, nothing. She was shocked to see me like that. For one year, we were drinking water from patilas and sleeping on gaddas.”

I don’t think even Gauri would have thought that from sleeping on mattresses on the floor they would be able to graduate to owning ‘Mannat’. But clearly, their love and trust in each other along with patience and hard work brought them where they are today.
