“It’s A Good Time To Let Virat Take Over,” Says Dravid On Dhoni’s Decision To Step Down

MS Dhoni’s sudden declaration of stepping down as India’s limited-overs captain has sparked a heated discussion in the entire cricketing world. While his fans believe that India’s best ever captain shouldn’t have made the call, experts think that this might be another masterstroke from Dhoni that will help the Indian team in the longer run.

In a recent interview, cricketing legend and current coach of the junior Indian side, Rahul Dravid said that MSD has chosen the perfect time to quit captaincy considering the next World Cup is now just two years away.

“I think, if he didn’t see himself continuing till the next World Cup, he got the timing really right. I think it is a good time to let Virat Kohli take over and have enough time to be able to build a one-day team to his liking for the next World Cup.”

Dravid believes that Dhoni’s decision is not a big surprise as there were talks of him quitting after the Champions Trophy in June 2017.

“(Dhoni’s decision was) probably not that much of a surprise, in the sense that he probably knew that the time was sooner rather than later.”

The former Indian captain also added that Dhoni is an invaluable asset to the side. The kind of experience and knowledge of playing under pressure he has, is not easy to find and easy to get.

“History will remember him as India’s most successful captain. And someone who really, in his time as an Indian captain, took the team and the game forward in this country.”

Speaking about Virat Kohli, Dravid said that it is important for India’s next captain to have an ‘in-form’ Dhoni by his side.

“I guess if you are Kohli, you will actually be hoping that MS Dhoni does really well and is able to hold on to his place. Because you would like that kind of experience performing well in the team. Just that knowledge would be priceless for Kohli to have.”

Both Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni are considered to be selfless cricketers who never cared for awards or recognitions and always put the team before themselves and this interview is a testament to that. Let’s hope that a wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni brings more glory to India in the coming tournaments.
