Weddings in India are a lot more complicated than the union of two people promising to spend their entire lives together. There is a lot of pride and self-esteem, not just of families but entire communities, attached to a wedding. An intimate wedding is often looked down upon as the guest list exceeds hundreds, all of whom are meant to be pleased. The bigger the wedding, the more respectable it seems to be. Hence, couples who opt for smaller, more intimate weddings are met with a lot of judgement and criticism.
One of the criticisms couples opting for a small wedding are met with is that they are told that they would regret their decision; that they would look back at the past and wonder what it would have been like if they had the quintessential big fat Indian wedding following every ritual, every tradition and celebrating with everyone they knew.
