The results of the Swachh Survekshan 2018 was announced on Wednesday and we have a bit of a surprise. The results which were revealed by Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, had no metropolitan city in the top three! Shocked?
It was the city of Indore, once again, that retained the number one position as the cleanest city in India.
This was the first pan Indian exercise to judge cleanliness in urban India and it surveyed 4,203 cities from January 4 to March 10, 2018.
Much like last year, Bhopal retained its second spot in the rankings while Chandigarh moved up 8 paces to secure the 3rd spot.

Speaking to TOI about the same, an official said,
“The on-field survey for Swachh Survekshan has been conducted by an independent agency and the data for ranking of the cities has been collected from three sources – service level progress; direct observation by random field visits, and the third was citizen feedback.”
Chandigarh, placed at the 11th position last year, saw a major improvement since the cities became serious about the competition and replaced Vishakapatnam in the rankings.
However, it was combined effort of Indore’s Municipal Corporation and the citizens that saw the city ace the chart for two years in a row.

While the MNC performed its duty rightfully by clearing the trash on time, the citizens stopped tossing water bottles from cars, throwing trash on roads and leaving behind wrappers in picnic spots.
In the other rankings, Jharkhand was termed as the best-performing state in 2018.

Nagpur took the number one position for the city with the best innovation and practices while Greater Mumbai was declared the cleanest State Capital.
