Christ University Faces Backlash After Exam Proctors Allegedly Harass Female Students

As most educational institutes are now conducting classes and examinations online, a new problem has arisen for the students – online harassment and inappropriate texts sent by exam proctors or someone who oversees an exam. In many cases, proctors are hired by a third party.

In a recent incident, a screenshot of an exam proctor addressing a female student as “baby” is being widely circulated online. The screenshot is allegedly taken by a student of Christ University during an ongoing online examination.

The screenshots were posted by the official Instagram account of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), Karnataka. In another screenshot, a student (supposedly from the same institute) revealed that similar instances have occurred before but no action has been taken by the college authority.

There are allegedly other instances of proctors asking female students to “lower” the camera.

The NSUI further alleged that when the screenshots were shown to a teacher, the reply was that it was just the proctor’s “caring approach” and that students should take it in the “right spirit”.

“This happened to a student who appeared in today’s online examination conducted by Christ University. She asked if she could end as she was done and the proctor replied ‘three more minutes baby’. Students claim that this has happened before also but no action was taken. Also, the proctor asks the girls to bend the camera. This isn’t right and should not happen to anyone,” NSUI wrote on Instagram.

This incident has caused massive outrage online. Some claimed that there are more students who have faced similar instances but are scared to report them. Others condemned the incident.

We hope that proper action is taken by the institute to make the online space safer for students.
