Let’s be honest, Delhi has a terrible reputation for women’s safety in the city. There have been numerous cases of assault, molestation and rape that have made the news over the years. And most of the time, these cases are followed by “reasons” that try to “justify” these sickening actions. Reasons like, “she shouldn’t have been wearing short clothes”, “she shouldn’t have been out this late” or “she shouldn’t have taken a cab alone.”
To the people spewing out these distasteful excuses for such horrific acts, I say fuck you!
In a series of open letters by Hindustan Times, Sahil Tomar, a cab driver in Delhi addresses the topic of rape in the city and makes an important point: It’s not the women who need to change, it’s us.
When a woman walks out onto the street all by herself, it doesn’t matter what time of day or night, she is in no way “asking for it.”
It’s not the women who need to change, it’s our mindset that is in dire need of an update.
