A Firefighter Rescued An Almost Lifeless Blind Labrador Who Was Lost In The Woods For 8 Days

“A dog is man’s best friend.”

I stand by this statement in its entirety. However, most of us misconstrue this statement to mean that the dog will be there for us at all times. That’s only one side of the coin. While your dog will be there for you unconditionally, it’s your solemn duty to be there for your dog as well. While your dog becomes an integral part of your life, you ARE its entire life.

Most recently, an elderly labrador who lost his sight due to glaucoma went missing in Boulder Creek, California for an entire week.

Beth Cole, the dog’s owner, and her family enlisted the help of the local community in order to search for her.

“Our neighbours and other members of the community helped us search day and night for a week. We looked everywhere.”

The forest was extremely mountainous and with each passing hour that the dog was not found, the family feared the worst.

Almost a week later, an off-duty firefighter, Dan Estrada spotted the dog while he was out hiking.

“At first, I thought it was a garbage bag in the water. My vision is not very good so it wasn’t until I got closer that I saw it’s actually a white lab laying there lifeless in this stream – her chin just above water level.”

As soon as he realised that she was alive, he jumped into the stream to rescue her.

He took the labrador back to her family who were all ecstatic to see her.

Dan added that it was threatening to rain soon and the labrador would not have survived another night had it started to pour.

A dog is truly man’s best friend. And we must strive to be there for our dog at all times. In the words of Josh Billings:

“A dog is the only thing on Earth that loves you more than you love yourself.”
