The Bhupathi-Paes Fight Has Gone Far Too Long And Indian Tennis Is Suffering Because Of It

At one point in time, the pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi was the best doubles team in the world. They were so good that they almost won all 4 grand slam doubles championships in a single year. Apart from being incredible doubles players, they complemented each other well.

If they had continued playing together, India would have surely won a Gold in Olympics and the pair would have been one of the best in tennis history.

But it was not to be.

Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have never gotten along with each other. And because of this, India’s Davis Cup chances have been affected, not to mention Olympics again.

Their fights have started anew after Leander Paes alleged that Bhupati, Davis Cup captain, has purposely kept him out of the team without any reason.

Yesterday, Mahesh Bhupathi released their WhatsApp messages to make a point that Paes was never going to be selected anyway. Because that’s how mature people solve a disagreement.

As you can see from the texts, both of them are not really at fault here. You can see that both give playing for India the first preference.

But the fact remains that Paes was not a part of the Davis Cup team. He was disappointed with that. He was doubly disappointed when Bhupathi released their personal chats on the Internet –

“Talk is cheap. History books, however, don’t lie.”

Wow. These two tennis veterans are over 40 years of age and whatever they have shared online for the past few days does not make any sense.

Every true Indian tennis fan gave up hopes of Paes and Bhupathi ever playing together again and actually winning. They shot that horse in the face a long time ago.

But whatever they are doing even today is plain embarrassing – for the country, tennis players and the audience. It will affect the team morale in the future too. Not that it matters, because let’s face it – India has a shitty team, and we have NO chance of winning the World Group. Our players are weak, they are inexperienced and the one who is experienced (Paes) is not included.

God gave India the best doubles players of the generation. But he also gave them big egos.

Give it a rest and let the future players play without your conflict polluting Indian tennis.
