What It’s Like To Be 22 In This World

Welcome to being 22.

You’re itching to be independent but your salary doesn’t permit it. You’re parents think you’re old enough to take responsibility but you aren’t old enough to drink in certain bars. Your newsfeed is filled with people from school getting married, when you can’t even see past your current relationship.

Your juniors ask you for advice, which you give willingly, when you still can’t figure out what you’re really doing with your own life.

Some days you feel like you’re lost in a sea of people and you like it that way, other times you’re itching to stand out. You trot around with your jholas and chappals from one workplace to another, trying to find a job that makes you happy with a resume that seems inefficient. You can’t help but dream.

You think about a vacation you can’t afford, a boyfriend/girlfriend you can’t find and happiness like you knew in school and college but with no reality.

You dread the thought of eating alone or watching a movie alone, but you still demand your space. You aren’t afraid to be left alone but you’re afraid of loneliness, so you look for people to fill the void. People, who no matter how hard you try, never match up to your old friends.

You’re tired of tripping in your uncomfortable heels and going to clubs that are blaring EDM, but you’ve started sipping your whisky and drinking not to get drunk but for it’s taste. You miss roaming around in your friend’s beat up car with the radio blaring a song that you never listen to now. Today you make do with whatever a colleague is playing and tune it to background noise.

You run away from being a corporate slave but you’re stuck in a 9 to 5 job.

You’d take those boring assignments over the job hunting, house hunting and saving money every month.

You make promises to yourself about a diet that’s never going to start, a hobby that you never end up pursuing and love that you never give yourself. You miss your mom but you haven’t spoken to her in days. You look at other couples and wish your relationship was better. You take to dating online, even though you judge those who do, because it’s the only way. You worry about the future of your new relationship but you have no clue about what you’re going to be doing 5 years from today.

But in this sea of figuring out your life, you make memories that will last forever. You remember the first time you moved out of the house, the first job you ever had, the first committed relationship you experienced and the first time you felt responsible.

It’s the time when it’s you for yourself and your dreams are what’s going to get you to 23….

Do you wonder about it too?
