This Heartfelt Post About A Girl Who Thinks She’s Not Pretty Enough Will Tear You Up

Our society has some pretty unrealistic beauty standards. I think I’ve made that abundantly clear here. All thanks to mainstream media bombarding us with images of accepted forms of beauty, most of us have begun to underestimate ourselves. What’s more, we’ve also begun to pass on these insecurities to the growing generation.

This girl, even at the tender age of five, does not believe she’s as pretty enough to be her favourite character, Elsa.

She seems to be bogged down by the weight of her own insecurities. For some reason, they do not allow her to think of herself as pretty.

This heartfelt Facebook post by ‘Love What Matters‘ speaks to the girl and urges her to believe in herself. Give it a read:

“You are frowning when you ask me if I think you are as pretty as Elsa, your current Disney crush. Of course, I tell you the truth: you are far more beautiful. But your eyes darken. And I understand.
You are five and so it’s a quick fix: dress, flowers, forest. I am on a mission to show you what I see every single day. We laugh until we are in stitches, tromping in these woods. I think, as you are lifting your hands in the air, that we should do this more. Me and you. Dress up and celebrate who we are. We should twirl more. We should strut. When you are glowing from my monitor you stop talking and stare. Your lip curls, your eyes light up and your stubborn, beautiful self is made more beautiful.
You continue with your day but I can’t seem to get it out of my mind. I’m still here, wondering how I am going to teach you something that I am still learning myself. How do I raise a woman that accepts, embraces, revels, celebrates who she is? How do I show you the path to self-worth that women seem to trip over their entire lives? Because what you felt earlier, the dark I saw in your eye: it’s a lie that whispers in every woman’s ear. All of us. You are five. And you heard it. It won’t always be as easy as a pretty dress and photo shoot. And what when quick fixes don’t work?
Then you’ll have to walk it out on your own. But I’ll go before you, honey. And I will twirl, even when I look ridiculous. Because you need me to. Because I am beautiful. Because you are beautiful.”

Embrace the woman you are. Love yourself. Stop letting society dictate what is beautiful and what is not. Stop living by these warped rules of society. Be your own woman.

Be you. Because you… are beautiful.
