I know I have said this earlier but the time has come to state it again- Bollywood and its award functions are way more famous for their favouritism (read nepotism) than the credibility they advertise with hashtags. In fact, it is so evident and rampant that a lot of the insiders like Aamir Khan and Kangana Ranaut have flagged and abandoned them for reasons known to all of us.
If that doesn’t ring a bell, remember when singer Amaal Mallik lashed out at Filmfare for promoting the plague and handing out awards like they mean nothing? Well, that was the beginning of the year and now we are at the end. And, unfortunately, nothing has changed!
Let me rephrase that; All of Bollywood was huddled under another starry night for the Zee Cine Awards 2018…
But amidst all the glitz and glamour, somehow the same looming disappointment found the place. How can I say that?
Well, for starters THIS.
In a year of Rangoon, Jagga Jasoos, Newton (all exquisitely shot films), the Zee Cine Award for Best Cinematography went to — wait for it — Golmaal Again.

P.S-
(btw, just an inconsequential anecdote — Rohit Shetty is hosting the show)

But the best blow came when the Best Picture award was announced. And, I’d rather let the fact do the talking!
The highlight of the night was the Best Picture Award. Nope, not Newton. Not Tumhari Sulu. Def not Bareily ki Barfi. Hindi Medium/Secret Superstar? Nah…. it’s… Golmaal Again, yo! Host Rohit Shetty’s response: “arrey.. this is so ..unexpected” #ZeeCineAwards2018

While I’m neither a critic nor a trade expert but it doesn’t take rocket science to figure out that something’s not right with the above-mentioned.
And guess what, I’m not alone.
Twitter felt the same and took to the social media site to express their bewilderment/bafflement. See for yourself.
1. The question(s) of the hour.
Hail Hindi Cinema. Are they not bored and ashamed of doing this ? Are these awards given on internet voting by general public? Or they set up a jury? https://t.co/5U0RFtL6iC

2. Calling out and how!
What a sham(e) https://t.co/01Qo3LPZIr
— Netra Agarwal (@Netraaa) December 19, 2017
3. WORD.
And then they excoriate Kangana Ranawat for saying awards are rigged, and diss Aamir for ignoring them. 😀 https://t.co/V2UKCYwXGN

4. Ummmmmm…

5. Same, Yash! SAME.
Something is very wrong with this country. Very very wrong!! https://t.co/qwk9Topc9X

8. Who wants to argue? (not me).
Would have laughed if this was a joke. But like Rohit Shetty's films, it ain't funny. https://t.co/47OfhJQOpe

9. Unfortunately, that’s the order of the day.
Mediocrity triumphs again, not surprised. https://t.co/9D4QdH2jDb

11. On another note…
.@ZeeCineAwards you're the real Khatro ke Khiladi #Rigged https://t.co/nBsjcd7OsZ
— someone (@AnitaDaveggie) December 20, 2017
But that’s not all.
The entire gala was filled with such tweet-storm evoking moments. Have a look at this thread and you’ll know.
1. Just the beginning.
Arijit Singh had 3 nominations in the Best Playback Singer Male category (out of a total 6), but Akhil Sachdev has won for Humsafar, Badrinath ki Dulhania. No worries. Akhil basically did what Congress couldn’t in Gujarat #ZeeCineAwards2018
— Ankur Pathak (@aktalkies) December 19, 2017
2. Because, what’s an award show without dance numbers?
Before one could focus too much on the awards, makers quickly got Katrina Kaif on stage and now the audience is jiving to Kala Chasma and Swag se Swagat. Just regular awards show business. #ZeeCineAwards2018
— Ankur Pathak (@aktalkies) December 19, 2017
3. I probably shouldn’t comment (I don’t have a visa for Pakistan).
Zee just announced an award for Toilet Ek Prem Katha. Not Best Film/Best Actor/Best Director or anything. Just an award for like, making a nice movie, for social awareness (a new category only for 2017). Because nationalism rox.
— Ankur Pathak (@aktalkies) December 19, 2017
4. I want a Powerpuff Girl award too!
Taapsee Pannu just won Girl Power Impactful Woman Award (a non-existent category). I think if I stay here long enough they’ll probably give me “Prolific Tweeter of the Evening Award.” #ZeeCineAwards2018
— Ankur Pathak (@aktalkies) December 19, 2017
5. Oh, the irony of it all.
OMG Rajkummar Rao — who was not nominated in the Best Actor category (Varun Dhawan is nominated for Judwaa 2/Hrithik for Kaabil) was just given ‘Impactful Actor Award.’ On stage, a puzzled Raj said: “this is for? ..New…ton I guess?” Silence followed.
— Ankur Pathak (@aktalkies) December 19, 2017
6. If this isn’t demotivating an actor then, what is?
… Raj quickly said, “I guess this is for everything I have done this year… Trapped, Newton, Bareily ki Barfi… thank you.”
— Ankur Pathak (@aktalkies) December 19, 2017
7. You bet, he did!
BTW, Best Actor Award (the real one) has been given to Varun Dhawan for Badrinath ki Dulhania.
— Ankur Pathak (@aktalkies) December 19, 2017
8. #Awkward.
Hahahah, Sridevi won an award for Mom (i have forgoten category names). Boney Kapoor comes on stage to present. Says, “Ye Wala Maine Manipulate Nahi Kiya hehehe.” SUPER COLD VIBES FOLLOW. #ZeeCineAwards2018
— Ankur Pathak (@aktalkies) December 19, 2017
And I don’t want to say anything except…
RT If You Feel Rajkummar Rao And Irrfan Khan Are More Deserving Than Varun Dhawan For "Best Actor" Award. Heights Of Nepotism Even In Award Shows. #ZeeCineAwards2018
— Sir Jadeja fan (@SirJadeja) December 19, 2017
I’m sorry…like I said, it’s probably not my place to say anything but as a big movie buff, I’m disheartened that talent means so little in front of an over-indulgent fraternity that clearly doesn’t understand the concept of awards.
