Indian transactions have been revolutionized ever since the popularisation of UPI, especially for hawkers, roadside sellers, cab and autorickshaw drivers. Eliminating the need for cash transactions, UPI ensures a seamless and secure mode of payment. People can manage their finances better and proof of this fact is a Marathi autorickshaw driver who recently revealed how UPI has had a profound impact on his life.
A dentist and educator named Gautam Govitrikar took to X (formerly Twitter) to share how an autorickshaw driver told him that online transactions had been a life-changing facility. When asked why, he revealed that he always has a steady balance in his bank account.
Those who know me know how big a fan of UPI I am.
But often, I am reminded of the profound impact it has had on all our lives.
Like this rickshaw driver I met today who says “It has been a life changing facility. “
“How?” I asked him
Here is how:
-I have a steady balance pic.twitter.com/KBr3lRvP4V— Gautam Govitrikar DMD (@Gautaamm) December 20, 2023
He further went on to reveal that it allows him to plan his monthly expenses beforehand and the absence of cash makes him more responsible for his money. Also, several passengers prefer paying via UPI apps instead of dealing with cash.
in my bank account.
-That allows me to plan the monthly expenses well ahead of time.
-When it was all cash, I would make some frivolous expenses. Now I am saving money.
-The number of fares and hence earning has increased because people gladly choose me over others due to me— Gautam Govitrikar DMD (@Gautaamm) December 20, 2023
Also, he doesn’t have to fight with passengers over change!
accepting UPI.
-It has taken away the hassle of loose change and so the main change has been there are no fights between me and the passengers over change. Everyone is happy. It got me thinking about how much we are able to do without cash.

So I am coming up with a “UPI challenge”
From today till next Wed, you can only have ₹100 in cash and have to manage all expenses under ₹10,000 using UPI.
Do share your experience both ways.
Who’s up for this? #UPI #DigitalPayments #Connectivity

Several people responded to this post agreeing with the benefits of UPI. It was revealed how in many cities, even small roadside shops and carts have a printed QR code and prefer accepting online payments over cash. Some have even stopped going to the ATM and carrying their wallets everywhere.

Since last 4 weeks i have had zero cash in my wallet. I pay everywhere through UPI. The only regret i feel for not carrying some small cash is my inability to give money to some beggars 🙂

What also changes
1. They can show how steady their income is – gives better data and hence access to credit.
2. Money is saved instead of spent immediately. Creates a saving culture.
3. With default use of phone – can try to look at Google maps and live traffic mapping
