The world we live in is defined by money and it is almost baffling how it makes one do the most vile things. It can also turn one against his/her own family and there are umpteen examples. In fact, we have another story that will drive the point home.
In a shocking incident, a debt-ridden man named Pasupuleti Maddileti sold off his wife and children for Rs 5 lakh at Koilakuntla in Kurnool district.
According to Deccan Chronicle, the Andhra man was addicted to gambling and liquor. Struggling to see off his mounting debt, the 38-year-old man decided to sell his family. Maddileti and his wife Venkatamma were blessed with 5 children out of which 4 were girls.
He sold his 17-year-old daughter to a relative for an amount of ₹ 1.5 lakh on condition that she should be married to his son’s kin after becoming eligible for marriage.
On successfully selling off his elder daughter, he went on to sell his wife Venkatamma, rest of the daughters and his son to his brother Busi for ₹ 5 lakh. When his wife rejected to sign the agreement, Maddileti allegedly tortured her.
Following the physical harassment, Venkatamma escaped to her parents and filed a complaint at Nandyal Taluka police station.
Sub-inspector Ramesh Babu said that he had received a complaint but it wasn’t a man selling his wife. He added that in the Budaga Jangalu community, buying and selling wives is a regular practice. However, an officer of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) revealed that two of the eldest girls have been rescued and sent to a state home.
