I remember the first time I got hooked to children reality shows. They were very intriguing because it was new to see children perform and compete. The way kids respond to situations is very different than adults. They are more innocent, and honestly speaking, much more dedicated. The whole nation is hooked to several kids reality shows which air on television every day. But, is it healthy to make kids compete against each other for entertainment?
Filmmaker Amole Gupte opened up about the issue in a DNA report.
Amole Gupte said that parents are not the only people to be blamed for manhandling of children during reality shows. He thinks that it’s the system which generates the root cause of this serious issue. He said,
Amole also mentioned how the kids are treated by the shows they participate in. The way they are brought to Mumbai from their distant towns and shoved into cheap hotels along with their parents is simply barbaric.
He also recalled a traumatic incident where a young participant suffered major physical and mental trauma because of the sheer pressure and inconsiderate work hours.
“A little, blind boy had made it to the finals of a singing contest. Throughout the day he was rehearsing under grueling circumstances for his song and finally at 1 am when he was to record, he lost his voice. The child was traumatised for life.”
Amole acknowledges the fact that defeat can do so much more harm to a kid than it can to an adult. Young kids don’t know how to process failure and they fall into a deep dark hole if they don’t meet the unrealistic expectations that are forced upon them.
“The kids shoot when they want to. There is no pressure on them. I’ve seen what happens to these children during long hours of shooting.”
Amole does realise that even parents are flies trapped in this big trap which is created by the industry.
“It’s the system. Everyone is a victim including the parents. The government needs to enforce laws against children being made to work long hours.”
Let’s hope Amole Gupte’s voice reaches the concerned people and the necessary amendments are made in the work hours of these young actors and participants. Just because this happens in the glamorous world of showbiz, doesn’t mean it’s not harassment.
Thank-you Amole, for raising an important issue.
