After Twinkle’s Toilet Tweet, Akshay Kumar Helps Install Bio-Latrines At Juhu Beach

As a country, India is progressing in leaps and bounds in terms of education, technology and especially economy. However, when it comes simple things like spitting, jaywalking or obeying traffic rules, we do begin to falter. Additionally, the menace of open-defecation had become so serious that it took an entire movie by Akshay Kumar to remind the masses about how we’re polluting the country.

Even Akshay’s wife Twinkle Khanna had tweeted about the menace that has plagued the path to progress.

Although Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was lauded by critics and the audiences, the reality wasn’t the same. And when Mrs. Funnybones decided to point this out, she somehow ended up hurting India’s sentiments.

While some criticised the actress for invading the man’s privacy, others said that she was insensitive and had no idea about the lack of loos in the slum areas. However, once the dust settled, it was abundantly clear that Mumbai (and India in general) was far from being completely open-defecation free.

However, eight months after the tweet, Akshay has teamed up with Shiv Sena to tackle this challenge.

According to a report by Mumbai Mirror, the Khiladi actor has joined hands with Aaditya Thackeray and spent about ₹ 10 lakhs for installing toilets at Juhu Beach. BMC officials have reported that the installation has six toilets inside it. Three of them are for men and three for women. In addition to that, there’s a separate row of urinals as well.

Although Akshay’s initiative has come in response to Twinkle Khanna’s complaints, it’s bound to have some positive environmental effects. Additionally, it also shows how Akshay Kumar doesn’t only preach on the big-screen, but practices his beliefs in real life as well.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Prashant Gaikwad says that these toilets will be eco-friendly and economical.

“The toilets have bio-digester so there will be no stink. The toilets will bring a lot of relief to not just the local slum dwellers, but also to visitors.”

Although Akshay Kumar’s intentions are admirable, Mumbai has a long way to go before becoming open-defecation free.

The BMC had launched a drive to clean-up Mumbai and by July 6 2017, the Quality Council of India had deemed the state of Maharasthra to be ODF (Open Defecation Free). However, it was abundantly clear through Twinkle Khanna’s tweet and several other reports, that that was a blatant lie.

As of now, Mumbai needs a sum total of 1.36 lakh lavatories to adhere to the Swachh Bharat Mission’s guidelines. And since the toilet sponsored by Akshay Kumar is the only one on the 6 km beach, the BMC has to install three or four similar ones before the situation comes in control.

So, here’s to hoping that the BMC succeeds in their venture and Akshay Kumar doesn’t have to make Toilet: Ek Prem Katha 2 in order to remind the country about its misdeeds.
