Being Indians, the mantra of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ – guest is equivalent to God, has been deeply ingrained in us. Our culture demands respect for each other and for our guests. So it is quite natural to expect decent treatment when we go out of our homes.

But unfortunately, the old prejudices and stereotypes still cause us to be ill-treated in some places of the world. Racism still exists and we’re still seen as illiterate and poor people.

Famed singer Adnan Sami recently shared an angry tweet on the social media platform, claiming that the Kuwaiti airport immigration ill-treated his staff for no reason and called them ‘Indian Dogs’.

He tweeted,

“We came 2 your city with love & our Indian brethren embraced us with it. You gave us no support. Kuwaiti airport immigration mistreated my staff for no reason & called them ‘Indian Dogs’! When you were contacted you did nothing!! How dare the Kuwaitis behave like this with arrogance?!”

Adnan Sami was recently in Kuwait for a live performance and claimed that although the Indians in Kuwait greeted them with warmth and love, the Kuwait immigration staff at the airport did not treat them well.

Twitter was angry about it too and did not make any effort to hide their anger either.

1. Well, he’s not the first to receive such mistreatment.

2. Utter shame, indeed.

3. Nothing justifies disrespect.

4. Yeah, can’t let go of our own values.

He later went on to tag External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who is now looking into the matter.

Although the original tweet is unavailable, a concerned person asked Sami about it and he said,

Whether it is a troop of celebrities or not, calling someone names and ill-treating them is really unacceptable. Everyone deserves respect, irrespective of where they are coming from.
