Virat Kohli Reveals How MS Dhoni Helped Him Become The Superstar He Is Today

Indian cricketers Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni share a bond made up of pure love and respect for each other. While Dhoni was well aware of Virat’s talent and gave up his captaincy to groom the Delhi lad, Kohli has always been vocal about his appreciation for Mahi. In fact, the current Indian skipper has stood like a pillar by his senior when the world turned against him.

And now, speaking about India’s 15 man squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Kohli heaped some more praise on Dhoni. Dedicating his success to the veteran, Kohli revealed that it was Dhoni who gave him the opportunity to bat at the number 3 spot during his initial days, which is unlikely to happen with a newcomer.

“When I walked into the team he had the option of trying someone else after few games, although I grabbed my chances but for me to get that kind of backing, was very crucial. Also, he gave me an opportunity to bat at No 3 because not many youngsters get to play at No 3.”

Speaking to India Today, Kohli added that it is really unfortunate that Mahi has been facing a lot of criticisms recently. However, he made it clear that he puts loyalty above all.

“It’s unfortunate to see so many people going after him. For me, loyalty matters the most.”

Kohli also explained why there is an incredible understanding between him and Dhoni.

“It’s just about the field placements and bowling changes and we say you know the angles, you know the pace of the pitch and that’s why there is so much of trust and respect between the two of us.”

MS Dhoni’s massive experience and his ability to read the game perfectly is always a plus for the Indian team. And even Kohli agrees.

“He is one person, who literally knows the game inside out. He understands the game from ‘Ball 1 to Ball 300 (50 overs) on the field. I won’t say its a luxury to have him but I am fortunate to have a mind like that from behind the stumps.”

Giving us some more insight into how the two hold the team together on the field, Kohli said,

“In the death overs, I know that I have to be on the outfield to try and make something work for the team because that’s my nature that I want to do something for the team rather than just be there. After 30-35 overs, he knows that I will be in the outfield and its on the auto mode.”

Without a shade of doubt, a cricketer of MS Dhoni’s stature is an asset for any team to have. Nonetheless, the mutual respect between Kohli and Dhoni is truly inspirational and we wish the boys all the best for the World Cup.
