Celebrities can never be too careful of what they do or speak on a public platform, particularly when their actions and opinions are influential. Then again, to err is human. And celebrities are humans too. What matters is whether they can own up to their mistakes and apologise with all humility or take offense at all the trolling and provide unnecessary justifications. Thankfully, Karan Johar chose the first one.
If you follow Karan Johar on Instagram, you’ll know he posts these ‘good morning’ and ‘toodles’ videos from the sets of India’s Got Talent, a show he co-judges with Kirron Kher and Malaika Arora.
It’s all fun and harmless banter, and the videos have quite the popularity.
In a recent video, KJo was seen making fun of co-judge Kirron Kher for sporting a native bamboo hat that some contestants from Arunachal Pradesh had brought for the judges. She was also holding a traditional Assamese headgear called ‘Japi’. And this has landed him in trouble.
Karan can be heard remarking, “Oh my God, what’s that on your head?” to which Kirron Kher tells him to also put on the hat since the people have so lovingly brought it for them. But when she asks him why he isn’t wearing his, Karan replies,
“Because you have guts, I don’t!”
The joke didn’t end there. KJo further mocked the hat,
“You look like you are going to break into some kind of qawwali!”
The above mockery of northeast culture resulted in some backlash, as people pointed out how Karan Johar was wrong to poke fun of the respected traditions and culture of a part of the country.
Dear @karanjohar the Japi and Gamusa are signs of respect and love. When someone gifts you one, you don't make fun of it, even if it does not go with fashion. Your video hurt the emotions of #Assamese people. Just informing, in case you didn't know it already. @KirronKherBJP

People also went ahead and rebuked Colors TV, the channel that airs the show.
Dear @ColorsTV, when you provide such things to your judges, it would make sense to educate them about the importance of these objects, in case they don't know. Signs of respect aren't meant to be made fun of. This will be on, cos this was your set.@KirronKherBJP @karanjohar

Following the above and other tweets and comments on his Instagram post, Karan Johar issued an apology.
He said the comments were unintentional and came from a place of ingorance about these cultures and traditions.
You are absolutely right and I would like to apologise if I have hurt any sentiments…..it was purely unintentional and came from a place of no knowledge which is absolutely no excuse….am extremely sensitive to the different cultures of our land and I am very sorry…. https://t.co/7dgzreI90L
