Danish Filmmaker, Lars Von Trier is known for his acute treatment of subjects such as mercy, sacrifice, and mental health. His films are known to be ambitious and visually distinctive which revolve around factors like brutality, hardcore sex, and hypnosis.
As far as the Cannes Film Festival is concerned, Trier has given the audience a tough time watching his films over the years and this time was no different. In fact, his latest film ‘The House That Jack Built’ has taken violence to a different level altogether.
According to reports, hundreds of people walked out of the screening to puke unable to take the destructiveness.
The dark and dreadful comedy circles around a highly intelligent serial killer serial killer who continues to adopt new ways of hacking his victims which are majorly women and children. Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz (of Downfall fame) and Uma Thurman are the most promising faces in the film.
Von Trier marked his return to the film festival after 6 years with ‘The House That Jack Built’ and has used nudity and violence as a gimmick. While there are a huge number of people who are thoroughly impressed by his work, the other half is not happy with how the director’s portrayal of things.
I’ve never seen anything like this at a film festival. More than 100 people have walked out of Lars von Trier’s ‘The House That Jack Built,’ which depicts the mutilation of women and children. “It’s disgusting,” one woman said on her way out. #Cannes2018 pic.twitter.com/GsBGCoyHEG

People have also heaped praise on the film by terming it as one of Von Trier’s best works to date. Without a doubt, these are people who are comfortable with extreme bloodshed and explicit violence showed on screen.

As mentioned earlier, this is not the first time Von Trier has come up with a highly controversial way of presenting a film. His previous works like Antichrist and Nymphomaniac also fall in the same category.
Needless to say, there are strong opinions about the movie and strong doesn’t even cut it. See it for yourself.
Lars von Trier’s ‘The House That Jack Built’ was one of the most unpleasant movie-going experiences of my life. #Cannes2018

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT: I decided I'd had enough after about 100 minutes, which is when I left. I'm a critic but I'm also a human being, and I don't have to play a part in somebody's elaborate system of torture. #Cannes2018

Vile or not, the movie sure has garnered the buzz it needed. And as for the taste, you can watch the trailer and gauge it for yourself.
