Indian Premier League – It came, it conquered and it changed the way people saw…err…rather played cricket.
And it was all a decade ago. Can you believe it? Yes, it was. In 2008, cricket got revamped and the T-20 frenzy took over Indians. Plus, with celebrities from the entertainment industry, it has been the best of both worlds ever since. Since it is IPL 10, let’s refresh our memories with some of the best IPL moments from 10 years ago.
1. The onset of the grand ‘Indian Premier League’
Cricket fans across the world got a sweet surprise a decade back when BCCI introduced the ‘Indian Premier League’ in the country. With cricketing giants from all over the world coming to play alongside Indian stars and every match a party, IPL was just the thing India needed for its primetime entertainment.
2. Bollywood stars cheering for cricketers
Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Juhi Chawla and countless others… the IPL ensured that Bollywood celebrities flock into the stadiums to cheer their teams and players. As for the fans, seeing their favourite film and sports stars at the same place was a dream come true!
3. Balaji bags first-ever hat-trick of the IPL
Playing for ‘Chennai Super Kings’ in the first edition of the IPL, Lakshmipathy Balaji took the first hat-trick of the competition while bowling the last over of the innings against ‘Kings XI Punjab’. Taking the wickets of Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla and VRV Singh, the hat-trick ensured an 18 run victory for the home side and a man-of-the-match award for the pacer.
4. Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in an over
The day Andrew Flintoff will remember his entire life. After a heated debate with the English all-rounder, Yuvraj Singh got all charged up and smashed six sixes off Stuart Broad’s over. Till date, he is the only batsman to do so in an international T20 game!
5. First IPL century by Brendon McCullum
Long before Chris Gayle thrashed bowlers all over the park, Brendon McCullum displayed his finesse as an attacking batsman by scoring a blistering hundred in the very first match of the IPL.
6. Cheerleaders at IPL matches
With the IPL, cheerleading got introduced in India 10 years back. Bringing glamour and excitement to the cricket field, these cheerleaders make sure that their team get the maximum crowd support.
7. Harbhajan’s slap to Sreesanth
Probably not the best display of sportsmanship, Harbhajan Singh became the angry young man on the field and took charge against Sreesanth after a ‘Mumbai Indians – Kings XI Punjab’ match. The incident left the world shocked and Bhajji gave a new meaning to ‘thrashing the bowler’.
8. Albie Morkel’s gigantic 124m six!
Playing for Chennai Super Kings, Albie Morkel got the better of Deccan Chargers’ Pragyan Ojha. Showing a display of power and precision, Morkel made the ball disappear by hitting it out of the park for a gigantic 124m long six.
9. Rajasthan Royals’Â IPL season 1Â victory
Stunning everyone, the underdogs of the tournament, ‘Rajasthan Royals’ took the trophy home of the very first season of the IPL. Playing under the captainship of Shane Warne, the Jaipur franchise displayed a brilliant combination of batting, bowling and fielding to win the title.
10. Vodafone ZooZoos
And who can forget the Vodafone ZooZoos and Mini ZooZoos? As Cricket in India is incomplete without the mention of Sachin Tendulkar, IPL is incomplete without mentioning the cute ZooZoos and Mini ZooZoos who have entertained us as much as cricket.
