We’ve all read about Shangri-La, the mystical but fictional valley that is synonymous with an earthly paradise – a Himalayan Utopia.

So we decided to find out magical places in India where you can live the ‘Shanri-La’ experience; places that are isolated from the outside world; places that are divinely beautiful.

1. Phugtal Monastery

Phugtal Monastery or Phugtal Gompa, is a beautiful Buddhist monastery overlooking a narrow valley and a rope-bridged river in south-eastern Zanskar, Ladakh in northern India. The enigmatic structure is situated on a cliff face at a height of over 3,800 meters resembles a honeycomb.

Though it was constructed in the early 12th century, it was hidden treasure for many until Hungarian Alexander Cosmo de Koros visited the place and stayed between the periods of 1826-27. Since trekking is the only way to reach this serene place, it has remained isolated and cut off from the rest of the region.
