Sansa Stark’s Hairstyles Always Had A Hidden Meaning And We Have Decoded All Of Them

Sansa-Stark-Hair-Game-of-Thrones

In the world of Game of Thrones, even a spec of dust has a meaning, so when it is something as major as a hairdo, you know fans will be inspecting each detail with a fine-toothed comb. The way the characters wear their hair, their dresses, their accessories, there’s always a reason for it.

Be it Cersei’s royal Lannister look or Margaery Tyrell’s delicate-yet-thorny Highgarden look, the way the ladies wear (or used to wear) their hair is not merely a style statement. One GoTian who has been under the hair-scanner is our Lady of Winterfell, Sansa Stark. For seven seasons, one can see Sansa carrying different hairdos, depending upon the situation and the environment that she is in at that moment.

Even Sophie Turner, who plays on-screen Sansa, in an interview to Refinery 29 said that it’s no coincidence.

“There’s always a pattern. It’s never random. Sansa’s hair is constantly reflecting the people she’s learning from, or mimicking, or inspired by at the time.”

“When she’s Cersei’s prisoner, and she’s kind of absorbing all her manipulative techniques, it’s reflected in her hairstyle.”

In season 1, when Sansa was at King’s Landing, she had absorbed the Queen’s style and was totally fangirling on her could’ve-been mother-in-law. Her way of showing it was through her hairstyle.

“And when she’s finding the spirit of Margaery in herself, she wears her hair like Margaery.”

She was saved from marrying Joffrey and hence, to show the high regards for them, Sansa started giving her tresses the Highgarden-esque styles.

“I’ve always liked when Sansa’s hair was dyed black and pulled back in very tight, taut French braids. It was her own look, and something that she’d created.”

We read something similar on Cosmopolitan and found that Sansa’s a sort of a hair-chameleon. They drew parallel of their hairdos with different GoT characters Sansa was inspired by.

This time when she was being forcibly getting married to Tyrion Lannister, Sansa’s hairstyle roared Lannister with embellishments and the styling.

When Sansa was back home at Winterfell around and after the Battle of the Bastards, she sported war-ready braid that her mom, Catelyn, sported during the War of the Five Kings.

Now that she’s the Lady of Winterfell (temporarily), she’s trying to channel her inner Cersei. After all, she has “learnt a great deal from her”, remember?

In the season seven finale preview, we just couldn’t see what way is she wearing her hair (It’s kinda hard to tell under that furry hood, TBH).

But anyway, we are quite keen to know, how is the Lady of Winterfell wearing her hair when The Great War – the only one that matters – is here.

Meanwhile, we are having a hard time managing our hair.
