She is a resident of Mariyappanapalya near Rajajinagar and her father has been bed ridden for over a decade after falling off from a building. After this unfortunate incident, her mother took up a house maid’s job to provide for Shalini and her brother. With mother not being in the house, Shalini had to take care of all the household chores from cleaning to taking care of her brother and father.

Just before her second PU exams, her brother was diagnosed with third stage blood cancer which led to Shalini being in the hospital most of the time. She said, “If I had not put in so much time in the hospital, I might have scored better. But my brother is more important to me than marks.” The situation required Shalini’s mother to be at hospital very often and hence Shalini had to take up her job.

So along with her CET preparations, she handles more than ten jobs that require cleaning, scrubbing, mopping, drawing rangoli etc. Her day begins at 4:30 am and ends at midnight from which she squeezes out time to study for CET. She credits her college officilas for the encouragement.

SGPTA PU College principal, Thyagarajnagar said, “She is a hardworking girl, friendly with everyone and attentive in nature. Despite her family’s condition, she always has a smile on her face.”

Shalini supports her family whole heartedly and she has no qualms with her life. We wish her a very bright future ahead. 🙂
