Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi has never shied away from playing the bad and bold on-screen. Be it his risque roles that cast him as ‘the unconventional’ or his image that earned him the title of ‘serial kisser’, Emraan has been there and done it all.
But if you keep the cast aside; Emraan is a loving husband, a doting dad, and an unapologetic artist who doesn’t believe in mincing his words. He is unafraid of calling a spade, spade and that speaks volumes about his body of work.
Emraan Hashmi, in an interview to Hindustan Times, recently opened up about the ongoing debate on nepotism and it is unlike any other confession you have heard before. He admits,
Yes, nepotism exists in our industry, and I got a break because of it. If my uncle (Mahesh Bhatt), who is a producer and director hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t have been an actor.”
This comes at a time when the entire industry, especially certain camps (remember the chant of ‘Nepotism Rocks’ by three classy men at IIFA and the shitstorm that followed?) is having nightmares even at the mention of nepotism.
Emraan even goes on to add that it was his inside connection that has made him what he is today. However, he maintains that he was never desperate to become an actor.
“My case was different. There was no dying need for me to become an actor or be a part of this industry. My college had got over, and I stepped into films.”
Talking about the prospect of his son becoming an actor one day, Emraan confesses it will be easier for him to get in the industry.
Having said that, survival, he insists, is a different ball game.
He couldn’t have said it any better. But while Emraan at least stops to acknowledge the problem that divided the entire fraternity, there are people who still guise it in big words like ‘Eugenics’!
Hopefully, that will change and more folks will follow suit.
