Wait, What? Mumbai’s St. Xavier’s College Has Banned Ripped Jeans Saying It Mocks The Poor

Xavierites, if you loved flaunting those distressed jeans of yours at the Mumbai campus, then you might not be able to do so any more. Your college just banned ripped jeans, on campus, completely. No kidding!

In a new directive issued by Principal Agnelo Menezes at Mumbai’s St Xavier’s College, there is a complete ban on ripped jeans. Their reason? It mocks the poor.

According to a Times of India report, Principal Menezes said,

“Torn clothes are worn by the poor because they have no choice, and one cannot make it a fashion statement. Students should be a little more professional in their approach in their college…

…A business school will never allow such clothes on the campus. Students can make use of all the fashion outside the college campus.”

Not only that, in an NDTV report he said,

“Torn jeans put college in an embarrassing position. After observing a few students wearing such clothes, the college took this decision.”

Those who turned up at campus wearing ripped jeans were asked to go back home, change and come because it was embarrassing for the college authorities. In addition to distressed jeans, the college doesn’t allow students to wear short clothes and sleeveless on campus.

While students are miffed they are questioning their reason behind such rule. A BA student said,

“The rule has just been announced and it’s already being implemented very strictly. Students are not being allowed to enter if they are wearing ripped jeans. This is an attack on our personal space. What we want to wear is our decision. Why should the college interfere?”

Alumnus and columnist Shobhaa De urges the students to take a stand,

“St Xavier’s college has always had a liberal and inclusive culture of education. I think the students should take a strong representation to the principal, stating that it is their right to choose what to wear as along as it is not indecent.”

Weird, much?
