In our country, we are expected to dress and behave decently while visiting religious sites like temples, mosques, churches, etc. However, with the rise of social media popularity and the need to document and publish ‘content’ on various platforms, many people pull off unnecessary acts in places that are deemed sacred. But someone proposing to the love of their life in front of a temple is not one of them.
Recently, a guy on Twitter shared a video of a couple visiting the Kedarnath temple. Both are dressed in colour-coordinated traditional clothes – the woman in a saree and the boy in a kurta. The woman decides to go down on one knee and propose to the guy.
The guy, on the other hand, is visibly surprised, says ‘yes’ and goes on to hug her. The two share an adorable moment.
However, many people on Twitter shared the video and used it as a reason to argue against the use of phones on religious sites like the Kedarnath temple. Here is one such tweet that went viral:
One of the Reasons why Smartphones should be Banned from All Leading Temples & Shrines
Just a Basic Phone within 20 KMs from the Main Temple, Eliminates Unnecessary Crowd
PS – I’m writing this from Kedarnath 🛕

Amidst the many people who argued against such “acts” being performed in religious places, there were plenty who questioned that if getting married in temples is okay, why is proposing at temples considered “vulgar”?
They stressed that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the video and showered support on the couple. Here’s a look at some supportive tweets:

Firstly, there is no issue with people looking to get married in front of a temple. They should probably read more about shiva and Parvati, and their immense love for each other. All our gods got married and had kids. Nice proposal. https://t.co/14xiqJEUHO

Some people can walk semi naked inside the temple showing their man boobs, sweaty body and hairy armpits, some people can marry inside the temple but 2 people who love cannot express it to each other. Logic of meritwaalas 😁 https://t.co/SWWBUPW27M

What's wrong in this video? They are just recording their once in a lifetime moment. Isn't proposing someone in front of a temple one of the purest thing, there is a reason people still believe the temple is the best place to get married. https://t.co/xioBaTUj2F

What's wrong if someone chose to propose in a temple? https://t.co/dbVsxHeYlO

Are we intolerant? Let people do what they want to do..
They are wearing decent cloths in temple I see NO problem in this video
Our own temples have exotic carvings before invasions see now
True Indian heritage is on the walls of old temple, those carvings https://t.co/43qRCu9vRP

I don’t see an issue here. What’s the problem?
They’re not disturbing anyone, not obstructing anyone. They’re decent no vulgar act. #Kedarnath https://t.co/ivlKvp4Bem

I personally see nothing wrong here…
There can be many reasons for not allowing smartphones near temples, but this is not one of them.#JaiShivShambhu https://t.co/WRKSuxrFio— 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢 (@anon_bhartiya) July 2, 2023
People need to understand what’s sacred for them isn’t the same for others. Temples are public places where your personal sentiments do not supercede.
The relationship between you and your god is very personal. It’s got nothing to do with views of a 3rd person. https://t.co/thOYOkJbw4

Why are acts of violence normalised in the country while simple acts of love are not?
