In a recent shocking incident, an unmarried pregnant woman died of attempting self-delivery while watching a YouTube tutorial video in Gorakhpur. The woman from Bahraich rented a room just for four days in the city. The landlord gave her the room after verifying her Aadhar card details. She told him that her mother will join her soon to help in delivery at the hospital.
On Monday morning, her neighbors found blood flowing out of her room and immediately informed the landlord about the same. He broke the door open and found the woman lying in a pool of blood with her newborn baby boy. A few scissors, blade and thread were also lying near her. He informed the police about the incident and they soon sent her body for post-mortem.
“Her smartphone revealed that she was watching ‘how to deliver the baby by self’ and other similar safe delivery processes on YouTube,” Ravi Rai, SHO of the respective area said, reports Hindustan Times.
Police informed the deceased’s relatives about the incident who confirmed that she was unmarried. Rai said that the possible reason behind her self-delivery attempt was “fear of the social stigma attached to being an unmarried mother.”
“Prima facie it appeared that she tried to give birth by watching YouTube. After post-mortem, police handed over her body to the family members. They have refused to lodge FIR against anybody,” he added.
The internet offers you with n number of videos on everything and anything that exists on this planet. But putting your own life at stake on the basis of such videos should never be appreciated. Moreover, it is high time our society works in favor of getting rid of the never-ending list of stigmas associated with women. At least then we would not have more such women giving up on life as the unmarried pregnant woman did.
