All of us spent much more time at home during the lockdown than we usually do which meant our power usage also went up. However, when we actually received our electricity bills for the month of June, the rise seemed unusually high.
According to Mid-day, actress Taapsee Pannu shared her bill amounts for April and May which were both below Rs.5,000 and the one for June which rose to Rs.36,000.
3 months of lockdown and I wonder what appliance(s) I have newly used or bought in the apartment only last month to have such an insane rise in my electricity bill. @Adani_Elec_Mum what kind of POWER r u charging us for? pic.twitter.com/jZMMoxDMgj

She said that the same happened with a vacant apartment and also complained of permission not being issued to open the electricity board’s link.
So a quick response issue but permission not issued ! Matlab is this some kind of besti link ? pic.twitter.com/N1nejZ5qB4

According to The Times of India, other celebrities like Dino Morea, Pulkit Samrat, Vir Das, Renuka Shahane, Sudhir Mishra and Shruti Seth have also faced this issue.
I was just going to tweet about it. Literally got a shock, pun intended. There was no surge in electricity, just the bill 🤔 @Adani_Elec_Mum https://t.co/zaJfQzFXla

Omg yes! And I freaking shifted to my mom and dads house in April! They’ve been charging MY flat which I haven’t lived in for 3 months, double of what I would pay actually living there! Mine is BEST. Do you know how to stop this nonsense?

Outlook India quoted a spokesperson of Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) explaining,
“We have re-started physical meter reading which was temporarily halted since March because of Covid-19. Bills were generated on the lower side, being an average of preceding three months; that is, December, January, and February, which are winter months. Actual consumption in the months of April, May, and June is comparatively higher due to seasonal impact (summer) and increased usage (advent of Lockdown/WFH). The bill amount for the past period shall be accounted as per the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) guidelines. The consumers will start receiving the bills based on their actual consumption with appropriate tariff slab benefits.”
Turns out, several people from Pune, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Rajasthan also received inflated bills.
We paid 6k when we were living in the flat
Now the bill is 15k when not a single soul is in that flat. Adani electricity logic.— ChickenChunkyBurger. (@AnantJa74880211) June 27, 2020
Exactly triple of the normal monthly bill @MSEDCL what’s happening, that too during a severe pandemic
