I haven’t been to Gujarat, but I simply adore sweet delicacies from the region such as their Jalebi, Shrikhand, Ladvo, and Kaju Katli.
Perhaps that’s why there’s this common notion that the state serves up flavorful dishes that are more sweet than spicy? Even the mild curries and jaggery laced daal!
However, this Twitter user from Gujarat thinks otherwise. Hence, she decided to get to the root cause of it and figure out why people think that Gujarati daals are sweet.
Taking to the micro-blogging site, @kaafinashedaar yesterday asked locals to share which part of Gujarat they belong to and whether they put sugar in their daal or not.
If you’re a Gujarati, please reply to this tweet which part of Gujarat do you belong to and whether you put sugar in your daal! We’re trying to find out who tf is maligning our name😵😵

While some people from Gujarat opined that they don’t put sugar in their daal, others said that it’s not sugar but jaggery that makes their daal sweet and better than the rest.
I’m from Junagadh, we don’t put sugar in daal😵

Jamnagar! And we eat ONLY spicy daal. Same with poha. Mostly in Saurashtra you don’t find people eating sweetened daal or poha as seen in other parts of Guj. Its always too spicy.

I am from Surat and we dont put sugar or jaggery in daal- infact we have never. I think most people from South of Gujarat don’t really enjoy sweetened sabji or daal.

Resident of Gujarat ever since, Ahmedabad, and no, we do not put sugar in daal. There’s only one khatta meetha specific daal being made, which is made by using jaggery. Most daal are spicy and tasty, not sweet at all.

I’m from kutch and yes we put sugar/jagger in our daal

Hahaa
Rajkot – yes we put Gud only in toor ki dal. Not in moong dal or arahr dal and other ones.
People are mistaken that we put sweet in all the dal. Its wrong. Only in toor dal.
For people to comment, they should have proper knowledge of things. Aise hi bakwas karte hai log.— Suketu Dave (@suketudave) March 22, 2021
My wife is from Gujarat, Vapi She puts sugar in her daal. Her family members make a mixture of sugar and oil and put some daal in it.

What the hell is wrong in following sweet daal. And how the hell is it maligning in any which way.
Learn to respect as long as it is not demeaning.Putting sugar in dal is in no way demeaning and try to adjust to liking of others as long as it not harmful.
I have lived there.

No body puts sugar… In real south gujaratis add jaggery in daal which tastes really good if u know how to cook..
— Shwetasticc (@7th_scorpion) March 22, 2021
Surprisingly, many non-Gujaratis also like to add some form of sweetener in their food to make it lip-smacking.
I am a Rajasthani migrated to Gujarat before 15 years. My mother makes a Rajasthani Dal but yes I put sugar in it upar se😅

Ahmedabad. Every tiffin service here serves mithi daal. And though belonging to bhojpuri household, I love it anyway.

Being a Punjabi, I like my daal hot and spicy. Do you also belong to the ‘sugar-in-daal’ clan?
