Dermatomyositis is a rare inflammatory disease that primarily affects the muscles and skin. It is classified as an autoimmune myopathy, meaning the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, leading to inflammation.

Suhani’s father revealed that two months ago, she started experiencing swelling in her hands which later spread to her entire body. This condition remained unidentified for the longest but over 10 days ago, after she was admitted to AIIMS, it was found that she suffered from the rare autoimmune disease.

Her steroid treatment began immediately but she ended up contracting an infection in the hospital that affected her lungs. This caused difficulty in breathing and she succumbed to the infection.

The exact cause of dermatomyositis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

“Every parent feels proud of their child. We were recognised everywhere as ‘Dangal girl’ Suhani’s parents. Our daughter made us very proud before she left us,” Suhani’s mother, Pooja Bhatnagar said in an interview, reported Hindustan Times.

We wish her family and loved ones strength during this difficult time.
