Freedom is, certainly, not for free. There are some brave hearts who guard our borders, leaving their family behind, risking their lives to the bullets of the enemies. A heroic tale of one such fearless soldier and his courageous mother is making rounds on social media.

A Facebook user and an army man’s wife, Rachna Bisht took the responsibility of sharing the heroic tales of our border-guards to pay homage to their immense courage and their selfless families.

Mrs. Hema Aziz, the proud mother of a 25-year-old who laid his life guarding the nation has always been an independent single mom who refrained from taking any allowance either after the death of her husband or son. Haneef lost his father at the age of 8. The single mom who is a classical singer by profession refused a free uniform for her son from the school.

On contrary, she proudly said to her son- “Tell your teacher my mother earns enough and can afford my uniform.”

Kargil martyr Capt Haneef had a Hindu mother and a Muslim father. He grew up celebrating both Eid and Diwali. He was 10 and his elder brother 12 when their mother Mrs Hema Aziz had to leave them for three months when she went on an official tour. The brothers managed on their own on money that she had left with neighbours. Going to school, paying their fees, managing food, ironing their clothes. Haneef could roll out paranthas at that age, she said. “I was hardly around for them when they grew up but they never complained because they understood that they did not have a father and their mother had to work.” They accepted responsibility towards work and that was exactly what 25-year-oldHaneef displayed in the freezing battlefield of Turtuk where he lost his life in the call of duty. Here is a message that his mother recorded for all of us. “You don’t have to join the Army to serve your country, you just have to do whatever work you have chosen sincerely and honestly. Sadly, we don’t even do that much.”

“Capt Haneef Uddin died from multiple bullet wounds in Turtuk when he was 25. She said Haneef was a soldier and was doing his duty towards his nation. She would not have expected him to turn back to save his life,” narrates Rachna.

After taking the wrath of his enemies, it was difficult to find Capt. Haneef’s body as the firing continued for several days. Despite the agony of losing her son who was the only support in her life, she bravely accepted the unfortunate fate. In fact, Mrs. Hema Aziz told the other officers that she did not want another soldier to risk his life to get her son’s body.

A selfless mother and a true patriot, Mrs. Hema Aziz’s chest still swells with pride and her eyes still water sharing the valor of her martyred son, Haneef.
