Rajasthan School Stops Rape Victim From Sitting For Boards As She Will ‘Spoil The Atmosphere’

In India, cases of rape and sexual assault often go unreported due to fear of social repercussions. Survivors face stigma, blame, and isolation, deterring them from seeking help or justice. Many fear not being believed or facing retaliation from their attackers. This silence perpetuates trauma and allows perpetrators to escape accountability.

In a recent case that was reported from Ajmer, Rajasthan, a gang-rape survivor wasn’t allowed to come to school and sit for her board exams. The teachers of the school said that she would “spoil the atmosphere” of the school and asked her to study at home, reported India Today.

The victim filed a complaint to the Child Welfare Committee about the incident and alleged that she wasn’t given the admit card for her board exams. The school had also struck off the victim’s name from the list containing the names of the students appearing for the exams.

“The victim appeared for her board examination in December last year. But, she was not allowed to give her examination as the school did not give her admit card. School teachers told her to study at home or else the school’s atmosphere would be spoilt,” said the Child Welfare Committee chairperson, Anjali Sharma.

The name of the school is Acme Academy and the principal of the school is a woman – Amita Pandey.

In order to break this vicious cycle, we need to create safe spaces for survivors to speak out, offer support, and hold perpetrators accountable.
