A few days ago, a guy named Tridip Mandal shared a picture of a bill that was handed to him at PVR, Noida. The multiplex charged him a whopping Rs 460 for popcorn and Rs 360 for cold drinks. His total bill was Rs 820, besides the cost of tickets. This started a widespread debate on social media regarding how multiplexes are becoming unaffordable and to take one family for a movie night burns a hole in a person’s pocket.
Rs 460 for 55gm of cheese popcorn, Rs 360 for 600ml of Pepsi. Total Rs 820 at @_PVRCinemas Noida.
That’s almost equal to annual subscription of @PrimeVideoIN.
No wonder people don’t go to cinemas anymore. Movie watching with family has just become unaffordable. pic.twitter.com/vSwyYlKEsK

Some also highlighted how a yearly subscription to an OTT platform is equivalent to the amount a person spends to watch one film at a multiplex. As people became more and more vocal about the absurd prices of snacks and drinks at multiplexes, PVR had to rethink how much they would charge the movie-going audience for their overall experience.
PVR recently addressed this on Twitter and introduced discounted rates and offers on food and drinks for the audience. On weekdays (Monday to Thursday) from 9 AM to 6 PM, the multiplex is offering items like burgers, samosas, sandwiches and cold drinks for Rs 99. On weekends (Friday to Sunday), they are offering unlimited popcorn and free refills of cold drinks.

Tridip responded to PVR’s tweet and thanked them for acting upon people’s suggestions. Here’s what he said:
I am glad that @_PVRCinemas took my tweet sportingly and acted on it.
This is a good move; see you at the movies 🙂— Tridip K Mandal (@tridipkmandal) July 12, 2023
Do you think this is a step in the right direction?
