Photo-Series Of An Old Couple Posing In The Same Spot For A Year Shows Love And Loss Aptly

Old-Couple

Growing old is inevitable, but growing old with the love of one’s life is a choice we mortals make. And, who doesn’t love a cute story of an old couple in love?

From the pages of 1973’s edition of Sunday Times magazine, the works of photographer Ken Griffiths has made it to the inter-web.

Ken’s photo-series, In An English Country Garden, captures Mr and Mrs Sweetman (a loving couple living in Three Cups Corner, East Sussex, UK) in the same spot in their garden. And, it captures the essence of love and loss, aptly.

1. It was shot in 1964, by Ken.

2. It was shot over a year and the Sweetmans posed for Ken, every month.

3. In all the pictures, the Sweetmans posed in the exact same spot.

4. And, in each picture, Mr Sweetman always stood on Mrs Sweetman’s left.

5. The things that change in the pictures are only the seasons…

6. ….the time of the day….

7. ….Their clothes….

8. And, some of their poses. That gesture by Mr Sweetman leaning the umbrella towards Mrs Sweetman is everything.

9. It became a monthly routine for the Sweetmans to pose in their garden.

10. They were cute as a button and each picture shows them that.

11. This picture is my favourite.

12. For this one, Mrs Sweetman was amiss, indicating her death and Mr Sweetman’s loneliness.

And, this just breaks our hearts. So, far the series was showing a lovely couple embracing old age, and the end was so heart-breaking.
