When the nominations for this year’s Oscars i.e. the 92nd Academy Awards came out, film buffs were not happy about the exclusion of talented female directors like Lulu Wang, Marielle Heller, Lorene Scafaria & Greta Gerwig, and actors of colour like Awkwafina, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Lopez, and Lupita Nyong’o. However, a foreign-language film taking home 4 statuettes has everyone cheering with enthusiasm.
According to the NY Times, the movie ‘Parasite’ won in the best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best international film categories. The South Korean black comedy thriller is the first non-English film to receive the top honour.

According to The Guardian, in the entire 92-year history of the Oscars, 10 foreign films have been nominated for the best picture but none of them have won. The captivating film revolves around class divide where an impoverished family infiltrates a wealthier one in Seoul.
While accepting the awards, Hollywood Reporter quoted director Bong Joon-ho saying,
“Writing a script is always such a lonely process; we never write to represent our countries. But this is [the] very first Oscar to South Korea. I thank my wife for always being an inspiration to me. I thank all the actors who are with me today for bringing this film to life.”

He further added,
“When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese’s films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor. I never thought I would win. When people in the U.S. were not familiar with my films, Quentin [Tarantino] always put my films on his list. He’s here, thank you so much. Quentin, I love you. And Todd [Phillips] and Sam [Mendes], great directors that I admire. If the Academy allows, I would like to get a Texas chainsaw, split the award into five and share it with all of you. Thank you. I will drink until next morning, thank you.”
The Asian cast and crew of the foreign film successfully broke the ‘so white’ and subtitle barriers and people were stoked.
