Bareilly Man Writes Official Letter To A Junior Who Didn’t Return A Borrowed Matchbox

We all have that one colleague or that one friend who always borrows stuff from us and we might as well forget that thing ever existed because we know we are never getting it back. While some of us choose to deal with it in a solemn manner dropping subtle hints, some of us go all out and write an official letter demanding the return of said object.

Why are you looking at the above statement like that? Never heard of someone being this petty? We didn’t either until we came across this masterpiece that has been winning the internet and is a perfect match for all the Tom Pettys out there.

In a hilarious incident in Bareilly, Sushil Kumar an assistant engineer in Moradabad wrote an official letter to his junior Mohit Pant when the latter failed to return a matchbox which had 19 matchsticks.

Oh! The blasphemy!

But that’s not all! The letter that has since gone viral on social media was written in a proper format of a government letter, complete with a stamp on 1 February, 2018.

Kumar wrote in the subject line: For not returning the matchbox borrowed on January 23. The contents of the letter are something along the lines of, “A matchbox which was kept in the office to light Mortein (mosquito coils) was borrowed by you at 8.40 pm on Tuesday, January 23. It had 19 matchsticks. But, as a matter of deep sorrow, even after a week, the matchbox has not been returned, causing unspeakable miseries to the staff, especially in evening.”

The letter further contained an ultimatum which was pretty stern and said, “You are directed to kindly ensure that the aforementioned matchbox is returned within three days of the receipt of this letter. Also, it should be ensured that no confrontational situation is born out of this dispute and mutual faith is restored among co-workers. In a situation contrary to one desired, you will solely be responsible for any official action.

I mean, can you blame him for thinking about the miseries of the staff? He’s just a good samaritan as far as I can see.

Times of India got in touch with Kumar who disclosed the conditions in which the letter was written. Apparently, he was showing a newbie how to write a formal letter when he came up with the unique idea. He said,

An untrained computer operator who recently joined our department had asked me to provide a format for an official letter marked to our seniors. I was about to write a sample letter on some other issue when there was a sudden power cut. As I needed a matchbox to light the candle, it reminded me that my colleague Mohit Pant hadn’t returned it to me. I wrote the sample letter on this but didn’t dispatch it. However, somebody from our office clicked a picture of the letter and posted it on social media.

Pant, to whom the letter was addressed did not know about the entire fiasco of the aforementioned letter. He said,

“I learnt about it on Friday evening when my colleagues started calling me up. I later received a copy of the letter on WhatsApp and contacted Kumar sir who explained to me the whole thing.”

So much for training a newbie. While the letter might not have been dispatched but the seriousness of it all, really had us doubling up with laughter! But, the questioned that remains to be answered is: Did he return the matchbox?
