North Korean Olympians May Be Forced To Work In Coal Mines As They Didn’t Win Enough Medals

Olympics.

The Olympics have ended and the glorious athletes are making it back to their homelands, some with medals and others with hopes to make it for the 2020 edition of the games.

But the North Korea team is probably going back in the state of fear.

The Olympians from North Korea were warned by Kim Jong-Un to return with at least 5 gold medals and 12 other medals prior to the Games. A total of 17 medals. However, the North Korean team were able to win two gold and 5 other medals.

Now the question is, what happens to the other players going back home?

These athletes may be moved to poorer quality housing, in the worst-case scenario, sent to work in the coal mines as punishment. Their ration cards may be taken away and it’s worse because, in North Korea, food is given only if you have a ration card.

Being sent to coal mines is not new, players from the national football team were reportedly sent to coal mines after their 7-0 defeat to Portugal at the 2010 World Cup. Many of those were allowed to return to their homes after one or two years.

The nation’s humiliation is likely to be compounded by the fact bitter rivals South Korea went home with 21 medals, including nine golds . Also because the North Korean athletes fraternised with them.

Athletes need to be encouraged and motivated to for participating, the fact that despite the circumstances present in the country, they managed to win 2 gold medals.
