A year before New Zealand decriminalizes cannabis in the country, the government is looking for an efficient candidate to work as a ‘cannabis expert’. They have advertised the job opening ahead of the upcoming referendum on legalizing the drug in 2020. The government is looking for a candidate with ‘proven experience’ with cannabis.

In return for their extraordinary expertise, a prospective applicant can expect a salary of Rs 1.39 Crore per annum.

As per the job description, the chosen candidate will have to educate policymakers to prepare the draft legislation of Cannabis Referendum Policy which will be operational from 2020. The position is based in Wellington and the candidate will be bound to work on a one-year fixed-term contract.

The basis on which the candidates will be shortlisted is, however, not specified. We wonder whether they will ask you to drag a puff or roll a joint during the interview!

Earlier this month, Justice Minister Andrew Little announced that people in New Zealand will take polls next year to determine whether the legislation of cannabis should be finalised.

“Cabinet has agreed there will be a simple Yes/No question on the basis of a draft piece of legislation. Officials are now empowered to draft the legislation with stakeholder input, and the Electoral Commission will draft the referendum question to appear on the ballot,” he told Daily Mail.

“The voters’ choice will be binding because all of the parties that make up the current Government have committed to abide by the outcome. We hope and expect the National Party will also commit to respecting the voters’ decision,” he added.
