Mumbai Cop Who Broke The Law To Save A 90-YO’s Life Is The Hero We Need Today

India is one of the most populated and diverse countries in the world. And that diversity comes with a vast array of problems that occur on a daily basis. Now, since we’ve appointed the police and the judiciary to deal with it, we usually look up to them for some sound advice. However, that has been on a steady decline with people constantly complaining that they don’t get help in the time of need. Thankfully, there are some individuals who choose not to fall into that category and do their job correctly. A recent example of that is Mumbai’s Urmila Kirdat.

According to DNA, Sub-inspector Urmila Kirdat’s heroism came into play when the family of 90-year-old Eruch Balsara wasn’t able to get to him. Shahrukh Marolia, a relative of Balsara said,

“Initially, I thought my uncle could be sleeping. but when he did not open the door even after repeated calls, I became a bit worried.”

Eruch Balsara lives in Matunga while his son lives in Singapore. So, Marolia and Balsara’s niece, Naazneen decided to pay him a visit and deliver some food for him on Wednesday. However, when Balsara couldn’t let them in, Marolia and Naazneen rushed to the Matunga Police Station to report this issue.

As soon as duty officer Urmila Kirdat learnt about this matter, she reached Balsara’s residence with her team. Additionally, she brought along the fire brigade for further assistance. Kirdat said,

“We tried to open the main door of the first floor flat, but it wouldn’t budge. The fire brigade then broke open the kitchen grill, entered the flat and opened main door.”

Once they made it through, they found Balsara unconscious on the floor and in need of medical assistance. The only relief was that he was still breathing.

While all this was going according to the norm, the real problem arose when they had to take Balsara to the hospital. The situation became worse as no ambulance was available as well. Naazneen said,

“It was critical to rush him to his regular medical support system in South-Mumbai, but as per protocol the police could provide assistance only up to Sion Hospital. We were losing every precious second and officer Urmila Kirdat conceded.”

Seeing that there was no other option, Kirdat, along with three constables, Balsara and his family, made their way to Breach Candy in South Mumbai. Kirdat described their journey saying,

“Marolia and Naazneen were also in the van with Eruch. With no ambulance, no oxygen mask and bad traffic condition, anything could have happened. Yet we managed to take The senior citizen safely to the hospital. The smiles on the faces of the Balsara family gave me immense satisfaction.”

Considering how bad Mumbai’s traffic is, their van obviously got stuck at Mumbai Central. However, Kirdat ordered the driver to drive on the opposing lane, whilst communicating with the traffic police to clear the road.

Kirdat’s valiant efforts were lauded by Balsara’s family. Marolia gushed about the police’s timeliness and said,

“As I saw my uncle resting comfortably in the bed and smile weakly at his family, I was filled with gratitude for the diligence and timely action of the police that saved possibly saved him from a dirty and painful end.”

When word of this brave endeavor spread and was reported to the Mumbai Police, they put out an extended note of gratitude for Kirdat.

We know that there’s a lot of negativity going around in this world. However, only small incidents like these are enough to inspire everyone to do some good. I salute Urmila Kirdat’s presence of mind and bravery, and hope our citizens learn a thing or two from her sense of duty.
